General Overview of the Chair of Pedagogy

The Chair of Pedagogy ensures general pedagogical as well as professional-pedagogical education (both in theory and practice) of BA's and MA's at classical universities, subsequently awarding the latter with the qualifications of "teacher" and "college teacher". The invaluable knowledge and expertise gained in the process of the research work carried out by members of the Chair of Pedagogy result in elaboration of new special courses, study modules and themes pertinent to the studies of "Pedagogy", "Methodics of Education", "Basics of Pedagogical Excellence", "Higher Education in Ukraine and the Bolognese Process" and "The Pedagogy of Higher Education". The above-mentioned knowledge also enriches the scientific research work conducted by students at the BA and MA educational level.

The scientific and educational activities conducted at the Chair of Pedagogy comply with the requirements and acts that regulate the Higher Education in Ukraine (The Ukrainian Constitution, The Law of Education, The Law of Higher Education, the injuctions issued by Rector of Odessa National University, Dean of Romanic-Germanic Faculty).

The Chair of Pedagogy operates a Gender Study and Valeological laboratories, a series of pedagogical olympiads and tournaments on an annual basis, student volunteer- and other methodical and educational activities.

The Gender Study Lab headed by professor O. Tsokur successfully conducts experimental activities focused on the integration of the "gender approach" into the system of Higher Pedagogical and Professional Education and seeks to motivate graduate students, MA's and BA's as future college teachers to conduct educational activities in the framework of gender studies.

The Valeological Study Lab headed by senior teacher, Ms. L.Volkova provides scientific and methodical support to the annual regional and Ukrainian Festival "Youth For Healthy Life" as well as annual workshops named "From Healthy Youth to Healthy Future".

The annual Ukrainian Pedagogical Tournament (headed by prof. ass. L.Weilande, prof. ass. L.Prokofieva) aimed at enhancement of the student's professional Skills and exposure of the student's professional talents (1st Round) takes place at the Chair of Pedagogy.

The Chair of Pedagogy annually stages a tournament named "Innovational Pedagogical Projects" aimed at enhancement of pedagogical education of graduate students and formation of teacher's potential for the innovational activities at higher educational institutions (headed by professor O. Tsokur, prof. ass. N. Kuznetsova, prof.ass. V. Pavlova).

The space of administrative premises occupied and used by the Chair(54sq.m.) complies with the general requirements, the Chair utilizes basic study materials in pedagogical sciences, dictionaries, reference and methodical sources, pedagogical study manuals, selection of thesis works in pedagogy. Various auxiliary materials, charts, maps, videocassettes as well as other visual materials are available and utilized for lectures by members of the Chair.The Chair is equipped with several computers, there is also a printer, a photocopier, and a TV set available for multiple educational purposes.

International Activity

The Chair of Pedagogy at Odessa National University has launched the research program in the framework of the International Slavic Educational Academy named after Y. Komensky.

Each year, since 2004 the teachers and graduate students of the Chair of Pedagogy take part in international scientific conferences and seminars such as The International Educational Congress (Tiraspol,2005-2010; Sedlzi, 2006-2007; Moscow, 2008; Petrozavodsk,2008; Tiraspol, 2009; Odessa,2010) organized by the ISEA and aimed at demonstration of pedagogical innovations and scientific achievements in the gender-oriented, valeological and polycultural systems of education, formation of the gender-oriented, deontological, didactical and scientifiс culture of BA's and MA's, - the teachers of tomorrow.

On Sep.6-7,2011 in the premises of the Chair of Pedagogy another International Educational Congress took place. Many prominent scholars, progressive teachers, MA's, BA's, international graduate students (Russia, Moldova, Poland, Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Turkey, Israel).

The Scientific Activity

The theme of the scientific research work of the Chair of Pedagogy - "Researching the Obstacles in Formation of Professionalism of Future Teachers Under Requirements Related to the Euro-Integration" (curator: professor O.Tsokur). This theme is vital for the contemporary theory and practice of higher education pedagogy. The results achieved are implemented at various pedagogical study courses, included in the programs of pedagogical practice of students, MA's, BA's and graduate students, incorporated into the process of organization of their professional pedagogical education.

Trends in Scientific research

The object of research carried out at the Chair of Pedagogy is the phenomenon of professionalism of an university undergraduate's personality and activity as a socially and personally important result of the higher education gained. Precisely that proves to create the necessity of exposure and theoretical substantiation of certain pedagogical conditions and factors of its formation at each stage of the higher education: BA, MA, graduate students, PhD candidates.

The main trends of the scientific research carried out are listed below:

  • - formation of proficiency of future university teachers: the historical heritage, the contemporary science, the perspectives(prof. ass. N. Kuznetsova);
  • - modernization of higher education as a factor of formation of proficiency and consistency of a future teacher; the peculiarities of a university teacher's proficiency as the subject of innovational pedagogical activity; proficiency of an university teacher as subject of the "egalitarian" pedagogical awareness (prof. O. Tsokur);
  • - methodological aspect of the issue of formation of professional excellency of future psychologist(N. Nagornaya);
  • - peculiarities of professional excellence of contemporary teachers in the gender-oriented education of students(sen. teacher A. Zheleznyak);
  • - formation of a future teacher's proficiency by means of the indivially-focused educational methods (ass. prof. L. Weilande);
  • - development of a future teacher's personality by means of the pedagogical training (sen. teacher L. Volkova);
  • - the concept of formation of the scientific research culture of future teachers during the MA studies (sen. teacher А. Sombamania);
  • - formation of a future geography teacher's proficiency in the civil upbringing of students (ass. prof. L. Prokofieva);
  • - formation of proficiency of the personality and activity of a future teacher as the subject of educational relations (ass. prof. M. Ryabenko);
  • - formation of pedagogical excellence of graduate students of the science-related faculties by means of innovational technologies (ass.prof. V. Pavlova).

Members of the Chair of Pedagogy conduct scientific, organizational and lectural activities directed at popularization of pedagogical innovations at different educational institutions of Odessa and enhancement of the professional-pedagogical competence and scientific-research culture of teachers. Members of the Chair of Pedagogy together with post-graduate students, directed by professor O.Tsokur are currently working to elucidate a new pedagogical issue – the concept of formation of pedagogical artistry of contemporary university teachers. Precisely this vital issue is the theme of the forth-coming international scientific conference administered by the Chair of Pedagogy at Odessa National Mechnikov University: «The Pedagogical Artistry of Contemporary University Teacher: Just the Modern Fashion or the Necessity of the Time?» (26 October, 2012). Implementation of the results of scientific research into the modern practice is believed to be conducive for the upgrading and renewal of the contents and technologies of the higher and post-graduate pedagogical education, and will enhance the level of education on the whole.
